SYNOPSIS:
Oscar- winning Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda delivers
a biopic tribute to Lech Walesa, leader of the Solidarity movement, which
sparked off the 1989 anti-communist revolutions in Central and Eastern Europe and led to the collapse of the Iron
Curtain. With a great performance by Robert Wieckiewicz, the
film portrays the incredible rise of Walesa, from shipyard electrician to one
of the 20th century’s most iconic figures. Going into private, even
intimate spheres of Lech Walesa’s life, Wajda attempts to capture the
phenomenon of this incredible metamorphosis. From a historical perspective, the film documents political
and social transformations beyond anyone’s imagination at the time. It also
resonates strongly with events taking place today across the world. Lech Walesa
himself summed it up best: “Now others jump fences and tear down the walls.
They do it because freedom is a human right”.
